1972 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet

Volkswagen combined the evocative styling by the Italian Carrozzeria Ghia, and hand-built bodywork by German coach-builder Karmann to produce the Karmann Ghia. That's pretty impressive, it's hard to believe it's a Volkswagen. This one came can it to Jellybean AutoCrafters in quite rough shape needing major surgery inside and out. Having a coach built body the car felt quite at home in our shop surrounded by some world class cars and all the tools and talent to rebuild what it needed.

After dismantling it we had it media blasted by Specialty Blasting who did a tremendous job. Stripping it of its paint and existing filler revealed a different picture than we had anticipated but never the less it is coming along very well.
New body parts are not available but we were fortunate enough to find good used ones in California. Fabricating a new body is quite possible but was cost prohibitive on the car.
Coach built cars are the norm at Jellybean so to see the factory butt-welds is common but to so how they had smoothed them with English Pewter instead of lead was unusual. Other cars are also done in this manor but it is always a oleasure to see it done this way.
Once we had the body back to where it needed to be we coated it in metallic silver giving it a beautiful shine.
This lady owned Ghia has a special place in her life, it goes by the name Karmann and has a personality that is a pleasure to have in our shop.We are now touching up the mechanicals, restoring the Porsche wheels and adding new tires before returning Karmann back to her owner.
